USF Certificate

Bookkeeper Certificate/Certified Bookkeeper (CB) Exam Prep

The American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB) has established a professional certification, the Certified Bookkeeper (CB) credential, to set a standard for bookkeeping knowledge. By fulfilling a two-year work experience requirement, successfully passing three separate examinations, and agreeing to a written code of ethics, individuals may obtain and display this credential as an indication of their comprehensive abilities.

Advantages and Benefits of Certification

This course, endorsed by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers (AIPB), helps you gain the technical knowledge and skills necessary to perform as a professional bookkeeper and to prepare for the national certification exam to become a Certified Bookkeeper.

  • Increase your earning potential
  • Enhance your professional status
  • Gain an edge in competitive job markets

Certification for bookkeepers provides evidence that an individual has proven skills and knowledge needed to carry out all key accounting functions for a business. USF has joined the ranks of more than 200 other colleges and universities that now offer courses to prepare working professionals for the national certification exam. For more information about the CB certification designation, see the AIPB website: http://www.aipb.org/certification_program.htm.

About the USF Bookkeeper Certificate Course

This 48-contact-hour course addresses the following subject areas covered by the national exam:

  • Adjusting entries (accruals and deferrals)
  • Correction of accounting errors (bank statement reconciliation)
  • Basic payroll
  • Basic book and tax depreciation
  • Recording and costing out merchandise inventory
  • Internal controls and fraud prevention

This course is for individuals who currently work as bookkeepers or who have worked previously as bookkeepers, and also for second-year accounting students. By successfully passing four separate examinations and signing a written code of ethics, bookkeepers with at least two years' work experience earn the right to put "CB" after their name.

Class Materials and Exam Information

The materials used in this course are a series of six workbooks offered through the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. There is a separate workbook for each of the six subject areas in the Certified Bookkeeper tests. Each section of each workbook includes a double quiz for drill on the skills and knowledge just learned. Because quiz questions resemble those on the national certification exam, they are excellent practice tools for the exam. Exams for part I and 2 are taken at Prometric Test Centers; parts 3 and 4 are open workbook tests. The experience requirement may be completed before or after the examinations. Textbooks and exam fees are included in the program cost.
