Interpretation and Translation

This course is designed for individuals who are fully bilingual and want to learn about interpreting, and for those who are working interpreters and have never received formal training. In an interactive environment, learn about the three Modes of Interpretation: Sight Translation, Simultaneous Interpretation, and Consecutive Interpretation. Examine how to apply each mode of interpretation in medical, legal, and conference settings. You will also learn self-monitoring techniques to help you score well on the interpreting exams.

If you are interested in becoming an interpreter and/or translator, this seminar is for you. In an interactive setting, you will learn the practice and ethics of interpreting and translating in medical, legal, and conference situations, among others. Demonstrations of the various interpretation and translation techniques as well as information about the various interpreting and translating exams (e.g., ATA accreditation, NAJIT and Federal Court Certification exams) will be provided. There will also be a section, dedicated to those in management, which will examine how to choose qualified interpreters.

This course is designed for individuals who are fully bilingual and want to learn about written translation as well as for working translators who have never received formal training. In an interactive environment, learn techniques on how to approach general, semi-technical and technical texts. Find the proper terminology for localization and effective methods for editing, which will help you avoid costly mistakes. Tailor the translation to the intended audience, and learn to estimate a job. Examine ways to market yourself as a translator. Learn test-taking techniques for the translation exams. You will have to translate and send three short texts prior to the class session.
