Professional and Workforce Development offers several options for human resource management training:
- SHRM Essentials of HR Management
- Human Resource Management Certificate
- Professional/Senior Professional in Human Resources
Continuing Education Hours
Upon completing a program, you will be eligible for continuing education contact hours/CEUs and a letter of completion from the University of South Florida, which may apply for professional development credit. The following organizations have approved our HR programs for recertification credit:
USF is an Approved Provider of the HR Certification Institute (HRCI). The use of this seal is not an endorsement by the HRCI of the quality of the program. It means that this program has met the HRCI criteria to be pre-approved for recertification credit.

Human Resource Management Certificate
This certificate program provides a comprehensive, practical foundation for HR generalists. People employed in HR will acquire a broader understanding of their profession, gain skills required for advancement, and acquire an educational credential in HR. New HR staff and career transitioners will receive a solid HR foundation. HR classes in Tampa are offered on an open enrollment basis. You enroll for each individual course.
To earn the Human Resource Management certificate, you must complete eight core courses and two electives over a two-year period. When you have completed the requirements of the program, you may request your certificate. Non-certificate students may enroll in individual courses.
Professional/Senior Professional in Human Resources
This course is designed primarily to assist those who are preparing to sit for the PHR/SPHR national certification exam, which is scheduled twice a year. It can also be used to advance your professional development. In cooperation with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and utilizing the SHRM Learning System®, this course provides a comprehensive review of the six major areas of the HR body of knowledge: Business Management and Strategy; Workforce Planning and Employment; Human Resource Development; Compensation and Benefits; Employee and Labor Relations; and Risk Management. Instruction and course content are updated annually. The curriculum is designed by subject matter experts; it is practitioner oriented and competency based and includes application exercises. Each student will receive the hard copy version of the SHRM Learning System® and will have access to web-based study tools and practice exams. Professional/Senior Professional in Human Resources Intensive
This intensive three-day course is designed primarily to assist those who are preparing to sit for the PHR/SPHR national certification exam, which is scheduled twice a year.
